The Greater Washington Urban League’s Thursday Network began the Empowerment Academy in the spring of 2011 at Woodrow Wilson Sr. High School to empower students in the Washington, DC area. The Empowerment Academy will give students the opportunity to discover ways to empower themselves and their surrounding communities. Students are matched with young professionals like you in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, who are dedicated to helping students achieve and be empowered through a structured program. The Academy seeks to instill the National Urban League (NUL) Four-Point Empowerment Agenda within its young participants. The NUL Empowerment Agenda is as follows:

• Education
• Jobs
• Health
• Housing

What sets the Thursday Network Empowerment Academy apart from other mentoring programs, is that we are not only providing the students with valuable tools needed to succeed in life, we are helping groom them into empowered, service-oriented young adults. To accomplish this task we need people like you who can provide them with positive examples of what they can become. Many students just need that extra push and that is what our program and mentors will provide for them. Building meaningful relationships with mentors like you will inspire and ignite these students to excel and achieve in all aspects of life.

If you have a willingness to dedicate your time to students and strong desire to empower and mentor our students, then you’re ready to participate in the Empowerment Academy! Our weekly evening workshops require mentors to work with students individually and in group atmospheres. Mentors are requested to attend all workshops to build and maintain meaningful relationships with our students. We understand that your time is valuable and thank you for your interest in serving our youth.
