"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Join us as we share this message with our friends and family and make Monday January 20th a "day on, not a day off."

The 20th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Blanket & Toiletry Drive is Thursday Network’s annual event to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the month of January, communities within DC, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County will be asked to donate items and funds to create care packages for housing-unstable residents.  On January 20, we will host a package assembly event in collaboration with Takoma Park Middle School’s student-led group, Difference Makers, to create care packages and deliver to people in need. We will also have the opportunity for kids to learn about other youth who are making a difference in their community.  This year’s  goal is to deliver 1,200 packages to people in need throughout DC, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County.

  • Sandwich Making & Packing: Volunteers will help make and pack 1, 200 PB&J sandwiches and 1,200 turkey sandwiches for those experiencing homelessness.
  • Writing Words of Inspiration: Volunteers will help write positive messages on each of the lunch bags.
  • Mug PaintingVolunteers will help decorate 100 mugs that will be distributed to older adults in the Montgomery County area.
  • Toiletry Packing: Volunteers will pack 1,200 gallon size Ziploc bags with an assortment of toiletry items (e.g., shampoo, sanitary napkins, toothpaste and toothbrushes).
  • Creating & Sorting Dog Treats and Making Chew Toys: Volunteers will help create and sort a variety of dog treats and chew toys using t-shirts.
  • Produce Sorting and Boxing: Volunteers will help sort produce from over 2, 400 pounds of donated fruit and vegetables from Imperfect Foods.
