Shayla Russell
Member since since 2024 Why are you running for this position? I’m running for the Membership Services Chair position to continue my personal and professional growth while contributing meaningfully to a movement that has positively impacted me. A turning point in my TN experience was the day after the 2024 election. With various emotions, I found myself seeking a space to process, connect, and most importantly act, so I joined a civic engagement meeting. During that meeting, before jumping into the agenda, the Chair asked, “How’s everyone feeling?” and as everyone voiced similar emotions, it reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my frustration, and it reignited my drive to serve. Since then, I’ve become more involved and passionate about the work that Thursday Network does. So, when the opportunity to serve as the Membership Chair arose, I felt that it would allow me to help each individual member find the same sense of belonging, purpose, and motivation that I did. I want to make sure members of Thursday Network feel heard, supported, and empowered. I believe in the potential of this organization and hope to expand its reach by strengthening the membership experience and fostering an environment where each person feels welcomed, engaged, and inspired to make a difference within their respective communities. What qualifications do you possess that make you uniquely qualified for this position? I am uniquely suited to serve as Membership Services Chair because of my professional background and personal journey. For over six years, I’ve worked as an Executive Assistant (EA), supporting Senior and C-Suite leadership across multiple industries —including corporate fashion, hospitality, government affairs, sustainability, and brokerage. As an EA, I routinely manage complex logistics, keep strategic goals on track, and ensure seamless communication across various teams with diverse needs. Managing the heavy calendars and competing priorities of multiple executives has honed my ability to remain level-headed and flexible under pressure, as well as helps me bring a high level of organization and relationship building to everything I do. Personally, I am relatively new to the DMV area – only being here a little over a year – and I understand the importance of finding community. Organizations like Thursday Network can play a vital role in fostering community, connection, and purpose—especially for transplants. I can relate to members seeking meaningful engagement and new friendships, and I’m excited to help them feel as welcomed and involved as I’ve felt here. While I don’t have all the answers, I care deeply about creating spaces where individuals feel seen, valued, and included. What initiatives would you implement if selected for this position? If selected for this position, I would like to focus on initiatives that make membership more accessible and meaningful. One of my top priorities would be to ensure that our services truly reflect the diverse needs and experiences of our members, both new and long-standing. I’d like to continue Member of Month Spotlights, but also highlight the incredible individuals that make up our network – celebrating their achievements, sharing their stories, and building stronger connection across the organization. I hope to create a Talent/Business directory to serve as a resource for collaboration, support, and visibility within our own TN community. Lastly, I would love to implement exit surveys for members who choose to leave. Gathering this feedback can offer great insight into why people disengage and help identify opportunities to improve retention and programming. If selected for this position, describe how you would use your role to impact on the Thursday Network, the Greater Washington Urban League, and the National Urban League Young Professionals? As a bottom-up organization, I believe TN is strongest when we listen to and reflect the priorities of those we serve. I would work to ensure open lines of communication with leadership, creating more spaces for feedback and dialogue. Through consistent updates, engagement efforts, and transparent communication, I would help members stay connected to the many programs and initiatives that align with our core values—civic engagement, professional development, and community empowerment. I also hope to help members see how their individual contributions, no matter the size, directly support the broader missions of equity, service, and social change that the Urban League represents. How much time can you commit to this position per month? 10-20 hours |
